SYCA LABS

ABOUT

An independent lab, building in the open.

We make original work across AI, software, engineering, and art — and we do it in public, process and failures included.

PRACTICE

Built in the open

Syca Labs is an independent, lifelong studio for original experiments. AI algorithms and software, engineering inventions, social experiments, pioneer art, physical builds, the odd outright adventure — the domain shifts from one project to the next, but the work always happens in public: not a portfolio of finished case studies, but a live record of what is being made, how it is being thought through, and where it goes wrong.

One conviction runs under all of it:

Better a failed original than a successful copy.

A copy can be finished. An original is mostly the process of finding out. We would rather spend a life on the second kind.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Applied AI & algorithms

The core competency: retrieval, memory, and reasoning systems designed to survive contact with real use. We spend our time on the unglamorous work — latency budgets, context handling, evaluation, and the trust layer — because that is what separates a working system from a convincing demo.

Software products

Whole products, taken from a private itch to something a stranger can install. WizPaz is the current flagship; each product we ship began as a problem we had ourselves and refused to keep living with.

Engineering & hardware

Where bits meet atoms. We design physical systems — power, water, structure, space — from first principles, treating a cargo van or a workshop rig with the same rigor we give a codebase.

Social & art experiments

The wing that resists a category. Interventions, provocations, and pioneer art — work made to pose a sharper question than the market usually asks, and to keep the lab honest about what “original” really costs.

WHAT WE MAKE

The flagship, so far, is WizPaz — ambient meeting intelligence for macOS. During a live conversation, the answer you need surfaces the moment a question lands, in a floating window only you can see. No note-taking theater, no dashboard to dig through afterward — just the right thing to say while it still matters. Try WizPaz ↗

Alongside the products are the experiments: a personal AI memory system that hands your own half-formed ideas back to you weeks later, a cargo van being turned into somewhere you can actually live, and the field notes that come out of both. Some are shipping, some are paused, some may yet crash. That’s the point of a lab.

And the range is deliberately open. A social experiment, an avant-garde art piece, a raw AI algorithm, or a pure engineering invention would all be equally at home here — the only entrance requirement is that it be genuinely someone’s own, not a copy of something that already works.

HOW WE WORK

01

Start from a real problem

Every project begins with something that actually breaks in a real day — not a gap spotted in a market. If we don't have the problem ourselves, we don't build the tool.

02

Show the process

The sketches, the iterations, the lines that stall or crash — all of it is public. A paused project is data, not shame. The Log and Experiments are the workshop with the doors open.

03

Ship what we trust

We only release what we depend on ourselves, every day. Utility is the bar, not novelty. Visible usefulness is the fuel that keeps a line growing instead of stalling.

04

Cadence over intensity

A lab is a lifelong thing, not a sprint. We'd rather move honestly and steadily — and admit when a line is paused — than fake progress to look busy.

WHERE THE NAME COMES FROM

Syca is short for sycamore. The founder is from Nanjing, a city planted almost wall-to-wall with them — the trees people often call French plane trees. A sycamore doesn’t win by being a rare specimen. It wins by standing in rows, casting shade, sheltering the people passing underneath. That is the roadmap: one tree first, made thick and tall — and, in time, a mile of them, grown together over many years.

Working on something original? We’d like to hear about it.
